This is one hell of a theory from the master himself. Relativity is a confusing theory beyond certain level. [Space Diagrams, Lorentz transform, Simultaneity, Space Time, Gravity, Time dilation, Length contractions] One cannot complete this book if he doesn't share a common interest in the mentioned physics stuffs/5().   Following up on that, you say that relativity can seem counterintuitive, but in the book you say it does not violate “common sense.” What do you mean? By definition, we can only have “common sense” about things that we commonly experience, and the surprising effects of relativity are not noticeable under the conditions of our everyday.

I think this book is a great introduction from first principles, and as much as possible from "common sense".

However, even though the k calculus allows you to do primitive calculations, if you want to do more serious calculations, you need to read a more standard Cited by: This is one of the first books which use common sense approach to the understanding of special theory of relativity using illustrations, drawings and diagrams.

At one time this theory was Relativity and common sense book mysterious, which is in fact obvious and clear-cut extension of ordinary ideas to the realm of high velocities.4/5. The basic theme of this book about relativity and common sense is so far stretched that one could call this a con job.

Like the editor must have warned Bondi to stay away from equations so as not to turn off the average potential reader thumbing the pages, but we have pages and pages of mental figuring with three characters with individual /5(11).

Relativity and Common Sense: A New Approach to Einstein by Hermann Bondi and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at Common sense dictates that this must be so. But as Einstein has pointed out, common sense is actually nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down in the mind prior to the age of eighteen.

Every new idea one encounters in later years must combat this accretion of “self-evident” concepts. The fact that Einstein's Theory of Relativity has been considered something strange and revolutionary is due, according to Professor Bondi, to several commonsense though erroneous notions about velocity, light, and time.

By viewing Newtonian physics in a different manner, a much more comprehensible picture of Relativity could be established with little trouble.4/5(1). Relativity seems strange, because it goes against common sense. But in fact, the effects of relativity are always present; they just aren't noticeable except at.

It defies the common sense. And that's what the book is about. It changes your outlook, the way you see the nature and gives you a new and better This book by Dr. Einstein is very well written, though you will find the anatomy of sentences a little unusual/5.

This radically reoriented and popular presentation of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity derives its concepts from Newtonian ideas rather than by opposing them. It demonstrates that time is relative rather than absolute, that high speeds affect the nature of time, and that acceleration affects speed, time, and :   Open Library is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published.

The Principle of Relativity has been discussed so often and in so many ways that it is perhaps presumptuous to attempt to add anything to the discussion except by offering original developments. Prelude to Relativity The theory of relativity led to a profound change in the way we perceive space and time.

The “common sense” rules that we use to relate space and time measurements in the Newtonian worldview differ seriously from the correct rules at speeds near the speed of light.
